Nomeamos o dano.

Então eu remexo a linguagem, dando-lhe formas menos obedientes.

Ensaiar a coexistência.
Revelar a imediatez do devir-conjunto multiespécies.

ENG:

We know we do not want this. Planetary suffering is vast, ubiquitous. Everywhere is too hot, too wet or too windy with new records set every year. Soon maybe 3000 glaciers a year will be melting, and the Blue Whales have stopped singing. It is an environmental horror show. Resistance to the extractive ideologies which have caused this devastation is necessary. We do not want this. We do not want the Anthropocene, the Capitilocene, the Plasticocene, or the Toxicocene. We do not want plastiglomerate threading through sandstone cliffs. We do not want ninety percent of seabirds carrying plastic in their guts, or to live with those lodged  inside our own bloodstream or brains.

Saying no can sharpen attention, but it cannot carry us very far. Refusal names the wound, not the work. We name the harm. We catalogue the damage. We say no again and again. And if we only rehearse what must end, we leave ourselves without a felt sense of what could take root instead. Desire atrophies when it has no language. Imagination collapses when it is asked only to catalogue damage. At some point the question has to shift, from what are we resisting to what are we actively calling into being.

In my work I often play with words. My masters research focused on how human languages reach for, seed from, and draw us closer to or further away from other earthlings. How te reo Māori carries birdsong in its structure. How taxonomies train us to see “tree” instead of the vast multispecies collaborations and communicative flows that constitute a single tree, or a forest as a living commons.

There are many writers who do the same, the Ecotopian lexicon, Braidotti’s Posthuman Glossary and Donna Haraway’s efforts to speak to the Plantiocene and Cthulucene are just some the other efforts underway to open the potential for new ways and worlds to come into being.

So I muck about with language, giving it into less obedient shapes. I want words that can flow, spit, seed, and sporulate. Words that compost into possibilities for different kinds of relations. I work with neologisms, giving sound to gaps in knowledge and story, in an attempt to say what I want to make, or name what I see, rather than endlessly describing what I hoped to avoid or what once was but is long since lost.

I do not believe in binaries, nor does the Earth. I am uninterested in the tired gravity of utopia versus dystopia. I am drawn instead to Transtopia, to futures that remain in motion. I saw how ecology, shaped through narrow historical lenses, fails to make room for hybridity, mutation, toxicity, or off-planet incursions. Its borders cannot hold the messy, entangled planet that holds us. So rather than ecology, I think with the ‘exological’ – the polyphony of forms that are already here, that are mutating, and emerging, that do not neatly fit within categories or containers, that embody both the ‘natural’ and ‘unnatural’ as they have been imagined by dualistic frameworks.

I understand the ‘human’ as an ideological construct, which flattens the lived reality of being a site of multispecies participation, from the river water that wets my mouth, to the recycled air that puffs my lungs, the 370 trillion viruses in my virome and the billions of bacteria in the biomes of my gut, elbow, cheek, eyelashes. So instead I position myself as a composite site, a symbiont form, a ‘Human+’, defined by the others who live within what I understand to be ‘me’. As Rosi Braidotti would say, ‘the life within me does not answer to my name’. I like to fuse things and see what emerges, the ‘transplanetary’, the ‘transtopic’, the ‘future folklore’ – constructed experiments that have bloomed at the intersection of the socio-cultural and the planetary, revealing unlikely alignments and knowledges that that while speculative, can be revelatory in their illumination.

Inevitably the tendrils of this exploration reached the definition of my practice itself. As a creative who has learnt through myriad disciplines and without formal artistic study discipline categories have proven frustrating at best, and paralysing at worst. I am no clearly defined sort of creator. Moving through many spheres teaches you quickly that the tools are not the work. Listing costume design, animation, film direction, immersive environments, puppetry, circus, live art, butoh, clowning, set design, or naming the management of companies, a masters in creative writing, or years spent learning from non-human teachers in remote places, tells you very little about what I actually do.

And even to foreground these diverse practices, words like transdisciplinary and cross disciplinary still seemed like failings for a planetary practice which is intended to assert the interconnected nature of all things. And what of the elements of my work that are essential to its goal but exceed the edges of what might be considered ‘art’ utilising as it does social organising and participatory learning alongside field work and spiritual inquiry?

So I started saying what it is for. My work is for;

Building planetary futures.

Rehearsing coexistence.

Revealing the immediacy of multispecies co-becoming.

Reattuning humans who want to feel intimacy with entangled earthly relations.

Glenn Albrecht named the Symbiocene as a counterpoint to extractive epochs. A time still to come, beyond human-centered cultures and their extractive violence, which is instead defined by mutualism across species lines, where all earthly life flourishes. And scientific pioneer Lynn Margulis asserted across her remarkable career that earth life is fundamentally  symbiotic –  and that on earth, only the symbiotic survive. As a writer of speculative futures, I have been keenly aware of the genres hopepunk and solarpunk, but found their narratives to still most often center on human life and well-being, even if enacted with greater reverence for earth ecologies. Wanting to foreground multispecies futures, adoring the idea of the Symbiocene and wanting to champion the symbiotic conditions of life, I arrived at Symbiopunk.

Symbiopunk is an active, multifaceted commitment to envisioning and inducing the Symbiocene.Symbiopunk work is unbound by discipline and aligned only in its objective and methods. Symbiopunk work envisions and helps to create the Symbiocene.

It does this by foregrounding and celebrating earthly stories, entanglements, histories and futures. Symbiopunk work is always interspecies work. It is created with awareness and in the interest of all earthlings, regardless of species or system, and understands that as a human endeavour it is always co-authored by non-human others.

It invites the rehearsal symbiotic futures through imaginative efforts and use Symbiopunk strategies, pictured below, borrowed from vegetal, aquatic, atmospheric, mineral, biologic worlds alongside intuitive practices to produce work that enacts the Symbiocene principals in the present, helping to enact this possible future in the present, in small doses.

The Symbiopunk works with instruction from the planet itself, what I like to call the Planetary Principals – which are ways of working that are demonstrated by earthlings and their ecosystems as ways of working across long, cosmic timescales, and working in collaboration across species, sites and scales. The Symbiopunk’s central tenets are to Resist: Reclaim: Revere: Repair and Replenish. To walk away from the reductive elements of binary thinking, of dualisms and the imagined separation between humans and the rest of the earth, and instead restitch themselves to presents, and futures of planetary co-becoming. To participate, unrelentingly in the messy and joyful work of becoming symbiotic, to understand the role of the human as one actor among many, acting as only one species amongst eight million who are themselves excellent teachers, guides and mentors for how to flourish in our patch of the universe.

When I introduced myself at the 2023 Posthuman Summer School as a Multigenre Symbiopunk, it was my first moment of speaking this possibility into being. I did not have a definition at the time, but promised one, and fortunately for me, was held to that promise. It has come to clarify my work, its intentions and most importantly given shape to practice I am keen for others to join, one that is urgent but also exuberant, fierce and also fun. The definition itself, by its ecological nature, is unfixed and always evolving. It is itself a micro-practice of hope, rehearsing horizons beyond the now and beyond the human. That original definition has continued to evolve over the past three years through lectures, conversations, and sustained self inquiry but the core has remained unchanged.I want to start the Symbiocene. I want to imagine what it might look like and make incursions that seed it in the present. The Anthropocene did not announce itself at the beginning. It arrived through accumulation. The Symbiocene can begin the same way, with small acts, experimentation, with gatherings and conversations, with new stories, commitments and with layered, intergenerational attention. And that means we can begin now, with what we have. And act not like we hope an affirmative future is possible, but like we know it is, because we are already making it in the present. And if this idea excites you, intrigues you, or even just opens a small crack where the light might start to seep in, lean in. As Arundahti Roy so perfectly put it during the pandemic, ‘Another world is not only possible, she is on her way. On a quiet day, I can hear her breathing.’ Let’s help bring her into being. So to align myself with the Earth, to represent my unshakable certainty that we have all we need and all the instructions necessary to link together in love and resilience and regeneration. To align myself with the reworlding efforts of the earthworms and the eucalyptus forests, with the salt rivers and the limestone cliffs, the bowen whale and the lunar moth, to cast a thread forward into the possible and the polyphonous, multispecies future,I call myself a symbiopunk. And if you want, you can too. Let’s begin.
